MY FAVOURITE NAIL CARE PRODUCTS

Hi everyone!
I was planning to do this post for a while, but I waited to see if a dramatic change in my nail care routine makes a difference to my nails.
I used to moisturise  my nails a couple of times a day, used many different nail strengtheners and every week I do a full manicure and pamper my nails.
My nails were always weak, splitting and breaking. They never looked bad or anything, but the only time I managed to grow them was during pregnancy and breastfeeding when my hormones were going crazy :)
About 2-3 months ago I decided to follow all the advice for strong nails to see if it makes a difference. I have been using cuticle oils and creams a couple of times a day, moisturisers as often I could, nail strengtheners daily and I also started using a crystal nail file.  To be honest, the biggets thing I noticed is the fact that the splitting of my nails stopped thanks to the crystal nail file sealing the edges better. My nails are a little bit  stronger now, but there isn't a big difference. They look very healthy and nice, but still feel weak and I can't grow them. As soon as they reach about 3mm they start breaking. :( I am convinced that not everybody can have strong nails and no matter how hard I try, even with taking vitamins etc, I will never have my dream nails. Here are all the products I am currently using to improve the condition of my nails:

Cuticle creams, oils and butters: OPI Avoplex (review), Antipodes Saviour Skin Balm ( review), Burt's Bess Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream, GWDIHW nail wizard, No7 Nourishing nail & cuticle cream.
hand creams: NYR Bee Lovely, Apicare repair me, Burt's Bees Honey and Grapessed Oil, L'Occitane  Shea Butter, Carrot & Shea, Weleda Skin Food, Burt's Bees hand Salve.
OPI nail envy nail strengthener is the only one I use at the moment. When I started using it it made a difference, but my nails must have got used to it, because there is no further improvement.
Review here

OPI crystal nail file- It is my hero! I reviewed it here.

I like using good quality base coats, top coats and nail polish. Cheap brands leave my nails feeling horrible and have a strong, unpleasant scent. My favourite brands are: Essie, Ciate, OPI, Deborah Lippmann and Mavala.

My all time favourite nail polish remover from Cutex- it is perfect for my weak nails and enriched with vitamins. It also makes my nails look whiter. I am sure you heard about this one before :)

  1. That is a lot of nail and hand products! Incidentally, where would you recommend for a good manicure in Glasgow? I live in Fife atm, but originally a Weegie, so when I'm home I like to treat myself :)

    1. I don't actually go to a salon to get my nails done. I do a pamper session every week myself :)

  3. I love Burts Bees for my hands.

This is of topic for this post, but I was wondering if you could recommended any good products for lips (not animal tested.) I've always had chapped/sore lips and if I don't wear a balm they feel like they're burning but nothing ever solves the problem, is there any product you've stumbled on that you think might work?

Thank you, I've been reading your blog for a while, it's my favourtie beauty blog and I've made many purchases after reading a review here.

    1. Thank you so much for being my loyal reader. I really appreciate it.

I recently tried Korres lip balms and they are very hydrating. I got them from Feel unique here: http://www.feelunique.com/brands/korres/lip-care
      I will review them soon.

I can also highly recommend the Antipodes Saviour skin balm I mentioned in this post. It is a multi purpose balm, for lips, cuticles, dry skin, burns etc. It is amazing. Very think and rich formula, but doesn't feel too heavy. A bit pricey- over £20, but it is a huge tin that will last for ages and is totally worth it.

They don't test on animals. xo

  5. I'm a bit confused as to why you are using so many products? Wouldn't it be better to stick with one handcream so you can actually measure the results it is giving? Just wondering! Also I think I may have to get one of those nail files as my nails are brittle too :(

    1. Hand creams don't make a difference to my nails at all. I have one cream in my bag, one in the kitchen, one in the bathroom, bedroom, living room etc. That's why I use so many. The best one is L'Occitane, but I am trying to use up all of the ones I have.

  6. Hey dear!
I know that you have a lot of experience when it comes to nailcare but did you know that nail strenghteners with formaldehyde make your nails split even more? When applying it it dries your nails out which at first sight makes them feel strong but you can imagine that dry nails are not the solution. Hope I could help you with that :)

    1. Actually, I don't have experience in nail care :) haha Even if I did It wouldn't help with my naturally paper thin nails. I just wanted to share my favourite products.

The thing is- because everybody gives me advice and tells me to use this and that and promises that it will make my nails super strong- I feel very, very insecure about my nails and do whatever I can to keep them healthy. Some people I met are very lucky to have rock hard nails naturally and love to preach about nail care, when they clearly don't do anything to their nails except painting them with nail polish! It is very frustrating.

I didn't know about the formaldehyde, I will do some research.

    2. Oh well then at least to me it seems like you have a lot of experience as you use all these products! I would be way to lazy for this ;)
I understand that it can be very confusing when everybody tells you something else but you´re on the right way when you look at what´s good for your nails like for example you found out that this file helps and you will keep using it :)
Have you tried Shellac? It´s this very strong nail polish that has to be applied and removed by pros but apparently it´s perfect if your nails need some help to grow!

  7. Wow that's amazing, you take a very good care of your nails! People tend to damage their nails by nail polishes and removers but don't pay too much attention on how healthy they are. If you like nail care, I strongly recommend you this nail oil I mentioned in my blog post >> my favourite nail oil It's a Japanese one but now sold in London as well! It smells so so so good and does work.

    1. I try to avoid nail polishes at the moment to be honest, but if I do use them, for example for my NOTD posts, I make sure to use a good, protective base coat.

      Thanks for your recommendation xo

  8. I love by Burts bee cuticle butter. I love it's lemon smell, I have quite week nails too, so I have to cut the splitting back once a month and leave them to regrow, without polish on :( which is a shame!

  12. Do you have Nailtiques Nail Protein in your country it helped my nails stop peeling and grow out. Also, L.A Girl Calcium Builder makes them harder.

    1. Yes, I do. I had a bottle ages ago and it never worked for me , but I bought a new one recently and will give it a go again. I hope it helps a little :)

      Thank you xo

    2. I forgot to say the one I use is Nailtiques Formula 2 Plus not the one that just says 2 on the bottle. When I start polishing my nails again I'm going to put a layer of the 2 Plus and a layer of L.A Girl Calcium Builder as base coat.

I use Burt's Bees Lemon Butter during the day and CND Solar Oil at night. I notice my cuticles heal faster when using both products than it does when I use one. I grab any naturally based lotion or cream I can.

I hope something works for you. I know how frustrating this can be. My nails are just getting back in shape.

  15. I had similar problems with my nails, used Nail Envy for years in various formulae, but still had badly peeling nails. Then on another blog I discovered Trind products - cuticle balsam, nail balsam and nail repair - and what a difference. So glad I tried them, I have nice nails at long last

    1. I tried Trind nail treatment and reviewed it on the blog here: http://www.theblackpearlblog.com/2012/02/strong-natural-nails-trind-nail-repair.html

I used it for a couple of weeks when my nails were paper thin. It really helped me and made my nails stronger and healthier looking, but I am dreaming of rock hard nails! Even when I manage to grow them a bit, they are still very weak, compared to what is considered normal nails.
