Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer (shade SX06) £38.00
I have been thinking about buying this product for a long time and I finally placed an order for it a couple of weeks ago. I've heard mixed reviews and I realise that you can either love it or hate it. I was quite confused when I first used it, so it is understandable, but it is all about the technique. Thankfully, I figured out a way to use it and I absolutely love it! I can't believe I waited so long to buy this miracle worker!
The Sensual Skin Enhancer is a multi-tasking formula, super pigmented and really thick. It feels liek a very thick concealer. The pot contains only 18g of product, but... you need the tiniest amount to cover your full face and a microscopic sized dot to conceal imperfections. Seriously... I have never seen anything so pigmented in my entire life.
I went for shade SX06 and it is a great match for my skin tone (I am NC25 in MAC Studio Fix Fluid). I like to use the Sensual Skin Enhancer in a couple of ways and either dab it onto the areas that need coverage with my fingers or use a damp beauty blender to really work it into the skin for a flawless finish. It depends, if I am in a hurry or have more time to perfect my makeup.
My favourite way to use it is to mix it with a little bit of my favourite moisturiser or an illuminating primer, to create a liquid foundation which allows me to use the product allover my face. You can make it as pigmented as you want and go from sheer to full coverage. Perfect! Once my base is done, I use a small brush to conceal any breakouts and scars that are still visible. The only thing I would advise you to do before applying this product onto your face is to exfoliate properly and moisturise really well. If you have any dry patches, the product might accentuate them, depending on the technique you use. Using a damp beauty blender/makeup sponge should prevent it. The end result is flawless and I couldn't believe how well the product covered all of my fresh (and old) acne scars.
Another technique I have tried (after reading Laura's review) is applying A LOT of moisturiser allover my face (without working it into the skin) and following with the Sensual Skin Enhancer on a foundation brush. You can see detailed photos and step by step in Laura's post - she is an amazing makeup artist and she knows what she is talking about :) The result is FLAWLESS!
The formula contains honey and jojoba oils to create a silky texture, but if you look at the ingredients, you will see that there is some mineral oil and talc which aren't great. Most foundations contain them though, so don't worry about it if you are not to fussed about ingredients. I am trying to ignore it, because I love the finish I can achieve with this product. I should also mention, that my skin is sensitive to nasties and MAC bases break me out terribly, so I was pleasantly surprised to be able to use this heavy duty product without having a reaction. I think it is because I only need a tiny amount each time, so it doesn't clog my pores at all and doesn't irritate my skin.
I like setting my Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer base with Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder to add a nice glow to the skin. This combo seems to last really well on my normal/combination skin, but you can either leave the base as it is or set it with your favourite powder. I don't need a touch up all day, because... IT IS WATERPROOF! Yes, that's right - you don't have to worry about being a streaky mess when you cry or get caught in the rain! The formula of this product adheres to the skin and stays in place like nothing else I have tried in the past, but it is also harder to remove, so a double (or triple) cleanse is a must at the end of the day!

Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer in SX06 used as a tinted moisturiser (mixed with face cream) and as a concealer on any scars. I didn't use anything under my eyes. |
I am really impressed with the Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer and I can't recommend it enough, if you like full coverage and a natural looking finish. It is a fantastic product, worth the high price tag and the little pot will last forever, because you need the tiniest amount to cover your full face. I am obsessed with it!

Let me know how you get on with it, if you decide to buy it. x
DeleteIt worries me that the number one ingredient is mineral oil - as much as I would love something that covered up all my redness, I imagine it'd clog up my pores and make my skin worse underneath? :( x
ReplyDeleteI was worried about it too, but just like I said - it didn't cause any problems and I have been using it for over 3 weeks. MAC bases break me out badly, this doesn't feel heavy at all and you need the tiniest amount to cover your full face.
DeleteOh lord, I can sense a trip to Space NK coming! My skin is really sensitive so it's lovely hearing it didn't cause you any problems and only having to use a small amount makes it easier to splurge slightly!
ReplyDeleteI loved this review, sweet!

Awww dear, I was just thinking how great this looked and sounded then saw the first ingredient! After the loreal cleansing oil with its mineral oil evilness ruined my skin that time I'm avoiding mineral oils at all costs , wahhh.
ReplyDeleteThis product looks amazing! Since they give you a good amount of product, it should work great as the foundation. Great idea!

i've been eyeing this stuff up for months.. i realllyyyy need to use up some face makeup i already have.. so maybe by summer? how do you think this would perform in the heat?
ReplyDeleteI am not sure how it will perform in the heat, but I don't think it will be an issue. This stuff stays put until I double (or triple) cleanse at night.
DeleteSorry to butt in, was just reading your comments! Thanks for the mention!! The SS enhancer is waterproof xx

ReplyDeleteI picked up a few samples of the Sensual Skin Enhancer from Camera Ready Cosmetics, I really love these, I use the ones I have as a concealer/under eye brightener! I don't think I could buy the tub as there isn't one that suits my skin colour exact but the samples work fab as a little goes such a long way!

This sounds like such a versatile product though it takes some time to figure out. I like the idea that it can be used as lightly or heavily as you wish, and can double up as both foundation and concealer. I have way too many bases at the moment but I will keep this product in mind if I'm looking for a new foundation :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks amazing on you! I think it looks a bit too much coverage for me though, I have a lot of fine lines there and I'm always scared heavy concealers will just crease on me!
