Weight Loss Update #3

This week wasn't weight loss focused at all for me, due to my horrid illness and other random things that are happening to me right now, but I lost 3 lbs this week, so 12 lbs in total so far. Was it due to the illness or what I was eating, I don't know, but my appetite definitely suffered.

I had a 39.5°C fever for 6 days straight and the back pain I mentioned last week got even worse, to the point when I was on all fours, crying and rocking like I was in labour. Paracetamol helped, but only with the pain for a few hours, which was good at night as I could sleep for a bit. It did not help with the fever though and I was either having major sweats or shivering like a leaf. At one point I was shivering so much that I thought I was going to die. My lips would actually turn blue when I was shivering and I looked like an real zombie. Not fun.

I was absolutely exhausted and couldn't even leave the house. I managed to drag myself to the doctors and it turns out I have a UTI (urinary tract infection) and the back pain was actually kidney pain. I was prescribed antibiotics, but the morning after I started taking them I woke up with a horrific allergic reaction, which is identical to the one I had after my c-section with Mia! Huge red patches shaped like circles on both sides of my belly button, the front of my thighs covered in hives and my face with little raised bumps. 

It started in the exact same places and looks exactly the same. I am actually in shock. Firstly, because now I know what caused me so much trauma after giving birth and secondly, because now when I googled about reactions to antibiotics, the hives I had are literally a classic penicillin allergy case, yet nobody knew what it was. I mean... I have seen so many doctors, even a dermatologist and they did not have a clue. What? 

So I had to stop taking the antibiotics... Now I am stuck with a UTI and nothing to cure it as it's the weekend and I am not in a real emergency. My temperature is fine and the rash stopped spreading. I can't take antihistamines, as they dry up your milk supply and I am already on my last legs when it comes to breastfeeding, as the illness really affected my supply. I drank more water that week, than ever, but I still ended up feeling dehydrated and I can even see that my boobs look deflated and Mia is getting frustrated quickly and biting my nipples demanding more milk. Ouch! I had to give her some formula to top her up and she's fine, but it is really heartbreaking because I worked my butt off to be able to breastfeed exclusively and this stupid infection just ruined it. I hope I get my supply back on track with some pumping and some nursing supplements, but I don't know if it will work again, as my body is completely run down at the moment. 

Ironically I am 100% sure, that this UTI is caused by me not being able to go to the toilet when I need to while breastfeeding or when Mia falls asleep on my after nursing, but hey... 

I tried my best to eat as much as I could and I did eat at least 1500 calories a day, but it was mostly calorie dense foods, like energy bars, seeds, superfood smoothies etc. I did manage to eat soups as well to get my veggies in, which is great. I normally have the opposite problem, you can't seem to stop me from eating! This week I was a different person! I think it actually helped me with recognising real hunger and shifting my attitude of 'live to eat' to the 'eat to live' scenario. 

Sooo, very eventful week. Not good, but I just had to deal with it and the kids and everything else, while being a real life zombie. Not fun, not recommended, but I have no family here to help me and I can't just give my boobs to someone else, so I had to feed Mia and look after her with a major fever for a week. It was the worst illness I have ever experienced. Not even kidding. It was so hard. I just want this UTI gone and the disgusting hives off my body, as they are absolutely vile and itchy as hell!

I am super happy that I am in double digits now though!

  1. I'm so sorry you have been so poorly, UTI's are horrid! I was born with Kidney reflux so feel your pain completely, I hope you are soon feeling back to normal again, well done with the weight loss, you are doing really well :) lots of love xxxx

  4. Been keeping up with your weight loss posts so far as I'm currently trying to lose weight. Actually had a reaction to antibiotic too this week... totally off food and so sick bluerghh, so I feel for you.

    Also had quite a few UTI's in the past, awful things, but I now take cranberry tablets daily and feel it really helps to keep things healthy down there, along with reducing caffiene and drinking enough water. Just thought it may be helpful for you to try.

  5. Sounds absolutely horrendous :( I'm sure you can get your supply back up if you keep letting her feed. Mia will work hard to help it increase. You probably have more than you think, she could just be frustrated for other reasons - growth spurt/teething/poorly mama. You could add some oats to your smoothies?
